About Linguistics.One of the issues that "the powers that be" have with the field which I occupy is that they don't truly know what linguistics is. When I answer them, it is "the science of human languages," their body language tells me that "it's a not a thing." Well, it is!
I understand that it doesn't seem, to them, like it's a thing, so I can relate: If each language has different words for everything, after all, then how can it be scientific, I hear themselves asking. |

Linguists are not the language police, checking everybody's grammar, spelling and/or punctuation for violations of the laws, handing out tickets whenever someone breaks regulations, however flagrantly, regarding random rules for decency/etiquette. In fact, many linguists enjoy it when the rules are broken, especially by learners (children & adults), because they are windows into language development.
